King William Road Vision

The King William Road Project presents a long-term vision for the precinct that captures the aspirations of its stakeholders and aligns ideas around growth, retail and dining, heritage, car parking, pedestrian access, safety, place making, greening and sustainability.

King William Road Activation - Parklets

Parklets are temporary structures designed to create new public spaces within the footprint of two car parks. They provide space for people to meet, gather, sit, pause and unwind.

Currently the City of Unley has two parklets installed on King William Road. To create new interest, the parklets receive a makeover and are repositioned on the road every 12 months.

It’s now time to move the parklets! Nominations are now open from traders, groups and organisations to become a King William Road parklet host for 2017/18.

The parklets are currently situated at:
  • My House & Home/Bode Hair Lounge/Medi Pedi Nail Spa (151-153 King William Rd)
  • Flowers152  (152 King William Rd)
  • Parklet Ideas

Traders, groups and associations are invited to come up with creative ideas to activate these spaces.
To encourage King William Road visitors to linger in the precinct, parklets typically include furniture and plants. However, they can be much more. Parklets can be spaces for children to play, for people to read, or dog owners to gather.
    Please note:

    • Any temporary items, such as furniture and umbrellas, must be removed each night
    • Food and drink cannot be served in the parklet but takeaway can be consumed, and
    • The cost of fitting out a parklet is at the permit holder’s expense.
  • What’s Involved in Being a Parklet Host?

A parklet host is in essence the custodian of the parklet space.   The host will keep the area safe and clean, bring temporary furniture in and out, water and care for any plants and generally keep the parklet in an attractive state.
View the Parklet Program Information Brochure for the full list of host responsibilities.

  • Parklet Location Criteria

Parklets are designed to enhance the amenity and appeal of the King William Road streetscrape. Their aim is to provide new pedestrian spaces for people to meet and gather.
As the parklets are situated in two car parking spaces, there are naturally a number of requirements that must be met to ensure that the parklets are safe and will not impact on such things as access to utilities, taxi ranks or bus stops.

Read more about the location requirements in the Parklet Program Information Brochure.

  • How to Nominate

Nominations to become a parklet host close at 5pm on Friday 24 March 2017.

All parklet applicants are required to submit the following:
    • A location plan which shows all surrounding services and structures
    • Photographs of the existing surroundings
    • A description (maximum 800 words) explaining what the parklet will look like, what it will be used for and any ideas unique to the proposal
