Dive into the Fish Tank!

Do you have an idea that could change the world?
Are you the next Richard Branson or Mark Zuckerberg?
Dive into the Fish Tank

We are calling all budding entrepreneurs (aka business people) aged 12-25 who live, work, study or play in the City of Unley to grab their thinking caps, hold on tight, and dive into the Fish Tank!

Fish Tank is a competition where wannabe entrepreneurs make business presentations to a panel of judges. Being tech-savvy Generation Xers, we’re asking you to make a short, 2 minute video ‘pitching’ your business idea or product.

Your idea can be whatever you like… it can be as simple as a cupcake company or as complicated as a new iPhone game that will rival Pokémon Go! No idea is too boring, too crazy or too weird.

Your pitch will be reviewed by a group of judges who will consider the impact it will have, its innovation, creativity, practicality and the costs involved in bringing it to life. Some criteria won’t apply to your business idea or product so don’t stress if you don’t meet all of these measures.

The top 10 pitches will make it through to the LIVE Fish Tank where you will pitch your business product or idea to a panel of judges. The winning pitch will receive $2,000 plus the chance to have a mentor help you get your idea off the ground.

To enter you must also complete an entry form. If you’re under 18, make sure you get permission from a parent or guardian to let you share your genius idea.

A Fish Tank information night will be held at the Unley Library on Thursday 25 August. Drop in any time between 4pm and 6pm when all your questions will be answered!

So what are you waiting for? Pitch your idea, dive into the FISH TANK and make a SPLASH!

Entries close 5pm, Monday 5 September.

  • What to Put in Your Pitch
Tell us about you and your idea
    • Who are you? Your name, age and relationship to the City of Unley.
    • What is your business idea or product? Tell us all about your idea, its inspiration and where you want it to go in the future.
    • At what stage is your idea? Have you already started to bring this idea to life?
    • Why are you applying for Fish Tank?
    • What would you use the $2,000 prize for?
    • What makes your idea so brilliant?
    • Why should you advance to the live fish tank?

    The judges might consider…
    • Impact. What impact will your business idea or product have on the other people, the community, the environment and even the world?
    • Innovation. Is your business idea or product something new, different and exciting?
    • Creativity. Has imagination been applied to your business idea or product?
    • Practicality. Is your business idea or product actually possible?
    • Budget. Are the costs involved with your business idea or product realistic and achievable?

It is also a chance for you to meet other likeminded businesspeople and do some networking! Head to our Information for Business page to see when the next one is, but hurry, tickets sell out fast!

Many schools and universities offer courses in entrepreneurialism so make sure you ask your teacher how they can help you out, or for the older ones, search some relevant courses and degrees that are on offer around the state.

Finally, a lot can be learnt from the internet! Simply search ‘how to get my business idea or product off the ground’ and you will find plenty of websites offering handy tips to get you started!

I get really bad stage fright, what if I make it to the Live Fish Tank but don’t want to talk in front of the panel?
Unfortunately, if you are not willing to present your pitch to the judges at the Live Fish Tank (and you make it to the top 10), you will not be in consideration for winning the competition. Don’t be nervous, the judges are all nice people and will help you through your pitch. Make sure you practice your pitch at home before the live Fish Tank and bring someone along on the day that can help you out.
