Approximately 35% of the rubbish that each Unley household throws away in their wheelie bins is organic material that can be easily made into compost.

Composting bins that can be ordered from City of Unley's Customer Service Centre.
If every Unley household composted organic matter that currently goes to landfill, it would:
- Save the community almost $100,000 in waste management costs; and
- Prevent almost 3,000 tonnes of landfill
The fertiliser that is created from compost is rich in nutrients for the garden and can be used to feed all plants and lawns. Material that can be composted includes lawn clippings, food and recycled paper pet litter.
The Compost Bin does not require worms to operate, however if worms are added, they will speed up the composting process.
