Composting and Worm Farms

Approximately 35% of the rubbish that each Unley household throws away in their wheelie bins is organic material that can be easily made into compost.

Click here to view our composting fact sheet.

There are three types of composting bins that can be ordered from City of Unley's Customer Service Centre.

If every Unley household composted organic matter that currently goes to landfill, it would:

  • Save the community almost $100,000 in waste management costs; and
  • Prevent almost 3,000 tonnes of landfill

The fertiliser that is created from compost is rich in nutrients for the garden and can be used to feed all plants and lawns. Material that can be composted includes lawn clippings, food and recycled paper pet litter.

worm packsWorms, Starter Pack (1000 worms)

The Starter Pack contains 1,000 worms and is great for getting started using a small container. They are also a great idea for the recreational fisher who uses worms as bait.

Adding small amounts of organic waste will inevitably produce more castings than the container can hold. The container will then have to have some castings removed or the worms and material moved to a larger container.
