Hard waste collection

East Waste collect hard rubbish for City of Unley residents and each household is entitled to one free 'at call' hard waste collection per financial year (1 July - 30 June).

The maximum amount that can be collected is two cubic metres 2m3. This equates (approx) to a standard 6ft x 4ft trailer load. 

Mattress and ensemble base collections need to be booked separately to other hard rubbish items. 

What you need to know

  • Not everything can be disposed of. Many household objects can be recycled or have alternative options.
  • Bookings are subject to availability. You can usually organise a collection within 3-4 weeks time.
  • Options may be available for preferred dates.
  • Any rubbish put out without a booking is considered illegal dumping, and penalties apply.
  • Cancellation requires 2 full business days notice prior to the collection date.
  • Residents are entitled to 1 free waste collection per financial year (1 July - 30 June). 

What can I throw out?

What is accepted?

  • Air conditioners Ensure that they are degassed by a licenced professional before placing them on the kerbside
  • Bikes and toys
  • Blinds and window coverings
  • Car seats Please cut straps so that old and damaged seats that are unsafe are not picked up and re-used OR recycle them at RAA Child Safety Centre, 101 Richmond Road Mile End.
  • Dismantled clothes lines
  • Furniture
  • Hot water services
  • Lawnmower Fuel tank must be empty
  • Mattresses Must be booked as a separate collection
  • Rainwater tanks
  • Refrigerators and freezers Please ensure that they are degassed by a licenced professional and remove doors for safety.Sheets of iron and guttering Up to 2 metre lengths.
  • Small items of scrap metal
  • Timber off cuts Up to 2 metre lengths, ensure that any nails are removed or bent over.
  • Washing machines and dryers
  • Wooden pallets Non-refundable/returnable.

Mattresses and ensembles

Mattresses or ensembles - must be booked as a separate collection.
Mattress and ensemble bases must be booked separately for recycling. Please allow 1-2 weeks for mattress or ensembles collections.

What is not accepted?

  • Hazardous products, toxic substances, explosives, flammables, ammunition.
    eg paint, pesticides, garden fertilisers, cleaning agents, suspected Asbestos items, explosives, ammunition, fuel, gas bottles, fire extinguishers, fibreglass.
  • Building material from erection, demolition or renovation of a property or shop, eg bricks, concrete, gyprock/plasterboard, cement mix, dirt, rubble, wooden pallets, tiles, toilet bowl and cisterns,
  • Car bodies, panels, engines, parts
  •  Tyres
  •  Batteries eg car, scooter, power packs, small AA.
  • Liquid waste including paint and oil.
  • Floor coverings
  • Garden waste, tree stumps
  •  Domestic waste
  •  Vegetation and garden waste including fruit and vegetables.
  • Mirrors, glass, windows
  •  Cardboard, bottles, cans eg kerbside recyclable items.
  • Unsanitary or sharps items eg syringes and medical waste.

 

How much can I throw out?

The maximum amount that can be collected is 2 cubic metres.

  • 2m length x 1m wide x 1m height
  • This amount equates (approx) to a small 6ft x 4ft trailer load.

Your hard waste is your responsibility. The council isn't responsible for removal of items added to your pile by others. You should ensure that waste outside your property is maintained safely until collected. Any rubbish put out without a booking is considered illegal dumping and can incur a penalty.
