Citizen of the Year Award Craig Scott receives award from Mayor Hewitson

Mayor Michael Hewitson AM presented two Citizen of the Year Awards at the Australia Day Celebrations held on the Unley Village Green.

Craig Scott received the SA Citizen of the Year Award. Craig is well-known for his contributions to the Goodwood Saints Football Club and has been involved as a player then administrator over the last 43 years.

His leadership as President has driven the development of a female football program and the SANFL Inclusive League – a league that ensures players with challenges, including mental and physical disabilities, are entirely integrated.

Craig displays strong advocacy for social justice issues. He has implemented opportunities for the homeless from the Hutt Street Centre, supported causes like the Red Shield Appeal, Breast Cancer and Mental Health education.

Outside of the football club community, and since 1994, Craig has been involved in Operation Flinders, a program to support at-risk youth.

Craig is a passionate individual whose vision and guidance have benefitted the City of Unley community and beyond.

Award for Active Citizenship Peter Croft - Grow Grow Grow receives award from Mayor Hewitson

The second award for Active Citizenship was presented to Peter Croft, representing the community group Grow Grow Grow Your Own.

The group aims to help the community grow more of its own food by running free workshops, covering topics such as wicking beds, how to build up soil, and other tips and techniques that help to deal with common problems experienced by those with less of a “green thumb.”

Even throughout COVID last year, Grow Grow Grow Your Own had moved to a Zoom model to ensure they could continue delivering these workshops to our community.

Conscious of climate change's heat effects, the group also encourages the community to extend its tree canopy. They have been involved in growing more than 1000 fruit tree seedlings to distribute to others sharing this goal.

Congratulations to both award recipients from all City of Unley Councillors and staff.
