For generations the South Australian community has been at the forefront of embracing positive environmental behaviours: from the introduction of container deposit legislation in the 1970s, to the plastic bag ban in 2009, and, more recently, to ensuring food waste is put in kerbside collected green bins for composting.

Now we are getting ready to start the phase-out of single-use plastics.

The State Government is introducing legislation to help us avoid waste and shift to reusable or recyclable options. It’s a positive step towards avoiding waste and reducing the harm caused to our wildlife, including marine life, through litter and pollution.

From March 1, 2021 the sale, supply and distribution of single-use plastic straws, cutlery and beverage stirrers will be restricted.

Note, exemptions apply for single-use plastic straws to ensure these can still be accessed by people with disabilities or medical needs.

The state government has launched the Replace the Waste website as the go-to place for businesses to get information, tips, tools, point of sale materials or other assistance to meet the March 1, 2021 deadline.

Community members and persons with health and disability needs can also find helpful information on Replace the Waste website.
