Calling all keen Unley gardeners
Published on 29 September 2023
The competition asks Unley residents to nominate gardens in various award categories, including prizes for ornamental and small gardens, produce patches, gardens that showcase environmental excellence and a People’s Choice Award.
People can submit their own garden or seek permission to enter someone else’s by filling in an entry form on the City of Unley website and providing a few photos.
The competition is open now and nominations can be submitted right up until midnight on Sunday 15 October.
A judging panel will visit shortlisted gardens the following week to assess against criteria such as layout, design, plant diversity and creativity, and category winners will receive a $200 Barrow & Bench Mitre 10 voucher!
The community event will be held in partnership with the Herb Society of South Australia, Barrow & Bench Mitre 10 and Green Adelaide, and feature workshops on a variety of gardening topics, with practical demonstrations and displays.
Informative presentations will be happening inside and outside the community centre, and the Herb Day Market will have stalls to buy quality edible, decorative and native plants.
Gardening experts include Steven Hoepfner from Wagtail who’ll share his experiences of food-growing and managing an urban farm, and Anthony Medcalf from the Herb Society who will talk about his love of herbs and salvias.
There’ll also be an indoor plant propagation ‘come ‘n try’ with Fullarton business identity Alice McDonald from Potso Botanic, and active local green groups Grow Grow Grow Your Own and Black Forest Conservancy sharing top growing and environmental tips.
Vendors will provide tasty treats including Soza’s Sri Lankan Street Food, What’s The Scoop ice cream and beverages by ASAP Coffee, which you can enjoy to the sounds of live acoustic music across the park lands.
There will be lots to do for the young ones too, with children’s activities provided by Green Adelaide showing how to attract fauna to gardens and organising wildlife treasure hunts!
Australian Parents for Climate Action will host their Little Climate Heroes Playgroup at the event, with the opportunity for little people to make a pot out of newspaper and plant a sunflower seedling.
The Spring Fling is happening in the beautiful grounds of the Fullarton Park Community Centre, 411 Fullarton Road, on the corner of Fisher Street and Fullarton Road. Come along on the first Sunday in November between 10am and 3pm to experience it all!
