Unley joins GigCity innovation network

South Australia’s Minister for Innovation and Skills David Pisoni announced the Unley Civic Precinct would join the network at a function held at Unley Civic Centre, attended by Council CEO Peter Tsokas, Mayor Michael Hewitson and many of the city’s elected members.
Other special guests comprised representatives of partnership organisations linked with Unley’s Civic Precinct which will benefit from the innovative program, including Maison de France - new home of the Office of the French Honorary Consul and French Australian Chamber of Commerce - and Little City Business Hub.
Unley Civic Precinct’s council-owned cottages on Edmund Avenue are undergoing redevelopment in coming months and, when this project is completed in 2022, the new facility is expected to attract up to 35 businesses in its business hub and co-working spaces, across a range of high-tech activities such as professional services, creative design, digital technology and multimedia.
City of Unley CEO Peter Tsokas said ‘We are thrilled to join the GigCity Network. By becoming a GigCity which can now provide high-speed internet services and offer interconnection with other innovation districts, we are able to build infrastructure which supports local business growth and entrepreneurship’.
‘The first phase of this rollout will connect the Edmund Avenue Cottages Co-working and Business Hub to the broader innovation network. Made possible with a State Government funding contribution, this is an important step toward our community benefitting from development and attraction of new types of high-tech businesses’ Mr Tsokas said.
Joining the network will link Unley with 23 other GigCity innovation precincts, which are already providing 390 businesses with access to affordable, high-speed internet connectivity and promises to attract more business ventures to these growing innovation hubs to take advantage of the service.
