Following an extensive procurement process the City of Unley has engaged civil contractor, BMD Constructions Pty Ltd, for the reconstruction of King William Road.
BMD Constructions is an award-winning construction company with a reputation for high quality delivery in design, construction and land development. The Adelaide Team has delivered a portfolio of high-profile community upgrades in the South Australian market.
Industry Advisor Rod Hook, who worked alongside the Council to support the procurement of a contractor, said the appointment of BMD Constructions was a move that would see the King William Road upgrade proceed in a timely manner with a methodology in line with community and trader expectations.
“The field of applicants to undertake the reconstruction of King William Road was competitive. Council is pleased to be able to award this project to BMD which holds an impressive portfolio of redevelopment work in South Australia, including the Henley Square and the current Gawler Place upgrades. We are confident that BMD offers the skills and capability to successfully deliver the design outcome envisaged by the Council for the project. This includes addressing the current structural issues with the road pavement as well as renewing and modernising the streetscape. The aim is to return King William Road to its pre-eminent position amongst Adelaide’s premier mainstreet retail precincts.” Mr Hook said.
“Further, the Council has spent much time listening to traders and community members and believes that BMD’s proposed construction methodology will minimise community and trader disruption.”
“Council stands by its consultation process for this upgrade and believes that the construction process achieves a respectful balance between the access required by the contractor and the need for ongoing community and traffic access and strong trading in the popular precinct.”
City of Unley Mayor Michael Hewitson AM said the Council expected construction work to commence this month with early works associated with the redevelopment being an upgrade of the Park/ Mitchell Street intersection and investigation works to enable the relocation of an SA Water pipe.
“Throughout the construction schedule we are doing everything in our power to minimise the short-term disruption which is necessary to realise significant long-term benefit,” Mayor Hewitson said.
“We will regularly engage with the community and traders throughout King William Road’s evolution. This project will redefine King William Road as Adelaide’s most loved dining and retail destination creating a new era for Unley.”
In 2018, the City of Unley commenced the redesign of King William Road due to the need to reconstruct the road pavement. Following an extensive consultation process and an overwhelming response from the local community, traders and visitors, the City of Unley subsequently announced its intention to transform King William Road.
The redevelopment includes repaving the much-loved mainstreet, creating a more aesthetically pleasing precinct through streetscaping, improving accessibility through new pedestrian crossings and lighting. The project will also establish a more active destination for the community to meet and congregate with shade, trees and infrastructure to support flexible outdoor dining and community events and activations.
With the contractor being engaged and with a proposed construction schedule now in place, Council will host resident and trader information sessions to inform the community about the construction process and address any inquiries.
Council will also provide project updates and advanced notices of works via its Design King William Road website and social media channels.
