Ultimate Vision for Unley Oval One Step Closer

A partnership between the City of Unley and national youth organisation LifeChanger Foundation is to be established as part of the Stage 2 redevelopment of the Unley Oval complex.

The Council last night endorsed the signing of a Letter of Intent between the two parties that would see LifeChanger Foundation establish its South Australian operations at Unley Oval. The arrangement would also allow for a joint approach to securing funding partners for the Stage 2 redevelopment.
LifeChanger, a youth and mentorship development organisation co-founded by former AFL player and coach Scott Watters, currently operates in Victoria and Queensland and has signalled its intent to broaden its operations to South Australia in 2019 followed by Western Australia and New South Wales in the coming years.
City of Unley Mayor Michael Hewitson said LifeChanger had confirmed its intention and commitment to work in partnership to realise the oval’s Stage 2 redevelopment following Mr Watters visiting the site in January.
“LifeChanger Foundation’s mission has clear and direct synergies with Council’s strategic objectives, particularly in the areas of youth development, healthy communities and active ageing, making it an ideal partner moving forward.”
Mayor Hewitson added the partnership would provide a number of tangible benefits to the broader Unley community.
“This partnership will allow both parties to work together to assist in funding of Stage two, which will complete our vision with for a multi-purpose modern facility that the whole community can enjoy,” he said.
“To have such a reputable and important community-orientated operator running its programs from Unley Oval ticks a lot of boxes in our eyes.”
Mayor Hewitson and Mr Watters have met with representatives of Sturt Football Club, which has also confirmed its support of the proposed arrangement.
“Once the Letter of Intent is signed, we can work together to refine the proposal and commence working on a detailed design of Stage two. Importantly we will now also be able to approach potential funding partners,” Mayor Hewitson said.
Stage 1 of the Unley Oval redevelopment is now complete with the official launch slated for March 10, 2019. Stage 1 comprised of upgrades to both the Oatey and MacKay stands, including player facilities and a new canteen. The City of Unley, the State Government, the AFL and Sturt Football Club jointly funded the first stage of the redevelopment.
The Stage 2 currently includes a multi- purpose open plan area for community use as well as a spectator viewing area with a bar space for match days.
