A New Chapter for Unley’s Cultural Heart

The Unley Museum is evolving into the Unley Museum and Galleries (UMAG), a bold new cultural destination that brings together art, history, science and culture in one inspiring space. With a major redevelopment underway, UMAG is set to offer a world-class experience unlike anything else in South Australia.
Why Are We Redeveloping?
After five national awards in as many years and a flourishing audience, the Museum has outgrown its current home.
The redevelopment will expand gallery space significantly, it will:
- introduce a working studio and classroom
- provide and improved research and library space
- include an enhanced, larger collection storage and conservation facility
The expansion will enable us to curate a dynamic program that will include nationally and internationally touring exhibitions, more significant locally curated exhibitions and multiple exhibitions at the one time.
Designed by Grieve Gillett Architects, the new facility will blend three heritage cottages with a striking contemporary extension. This design honours Unley’s past while creating a vibrant civic cultural precinct for the future.
Interim Museum Location?
While construction begins, the Museum is relocating to a temporary home, opening to the public on Monday 17 November 2025 at 39 Oxford Terrace. Visitors will be able to explore a live display about the redevelopment, enjoy a new local history exhibition, and take part in school holiday programs and research services. Support for school groups, children’s programs, family and general research will continue throughout the transition.
When Will the UMAG Open?
UMAG will launch in April 2027 with a dynamic program of exhibitions and activities, including a major national touring show. The new space will feature interactive digital experiences, regularly changing exhibitions, and unique opportunities to engage with art, history and culture. Construction is set to begin later this year, with completion expected by December 2026.

Object Spotlight: The Unley Wade Bicycle
One of the treasures making the move is the Unley Wade bicycle, built in the 1920s by William C Wade at his shop on Unley Road. Known for crafting racing bikes like the Wade Perfect and Adelaide Star, Wade’s work was a staple of local innovation.
This particular bicycle was used by Unley resident Amos Charlesworth for door-to-door deliveries and even appears in historic photographs. It’s a symbol of Unley’s entrepreneurial spirit and will soon receive the restoration it deserves in our new facility.
