Unley Restaurants Recognised in SA's First MICHELIN Guide

“I came to this city, fell in love with it, and opened Bistro Français on King William Road because I believed in it, not because it was ever the easy option,”
reflected Owner Baz Rampal. Baz’s story proves that a little belief can go a long way... all the way to international recognition.
Seventy-Seven restaurants across South Australia were recognised last week in the release of our State’s first ever MICHELIN Guide, a prestigious and world-renowned restaurant and hotel guide that showcases exceptional hospitality, innovation and culinary achievement. It is widely regarded as one of the highest honours given in the hospitality industry.
Among the venues recognised were two of our local favourites, both located just a short stroll from one another along the tree-lined stretch of King William Road in Hyde Park.
French restaurant, Bistro Français was named as one of just 16 Bib Gourmands, an accolade awarded to eateries offering exceptional value for money. Just up the road, popular Mediterranean restaurant, Agapi Greek, was also selected for inclusion in the Guide.
Selection for the MICHELIN Guide is conducted through anonymous inspectors, who make repeated covert visits, so for Umesh Randeniya, who has owned Agapi Greek for eight years, and Restaurant Manager, Daniel Sikic-Lyons, being named in the Guide came as a welcome surprise. "We weren't really looking for accolades, we were just looking to give the community good whole foods,” Daniel reflected humbly. “It’s a reward for everyone working so hard.”
Umesh agreed: “I am very proud, proud to be recognised... proud for my family, and for my staff, I have my team behind me... it’s a big achievement for the restaurant. I’m proud especially to have a restaurant in Unley.”
For Bistro Français, Baz shared a similar sentiment of gratitude for the recognition as a Bib Gourmand, “it’s a huge vote of confidence in what we do every day...more than anything, it is recognition for our team, who pour themselves into every single service... It has given all of us a reason to keep raising the bar.”
Our precincts are distinctive and driven by passionate traders like Baz, Umesh and their teams. This recognition is a testament to the quality, dedication and hard work that local businesses bring to our community everyday.
As Baz remarked, “for Unley, I think it shines a light on what locals have known for a long time, that this pocket of Adelaide is one of the best places in the state to eat and drink”
We couldn’t have said it better ourselves.
