Wood–Weller Bikeway (Stage 5): Wood Street to Cross Road – Streetscape

Wood-weller project stages.jpg The Wood–Weller Bikeway is a key walking and cycling project in the City of Unley, designed to enhance inner Adelaide’s cycling and walking network. Envisioned as a five-stage project, the Bikeway aims to:

  • create a safe and convenient north–south cycling route;
  • strengthen local street connections; and,
  • link key shared paths (like the Mike Turtur Bikeway and Charles Walk in the north, with the City of Mitcham in the south).

Stages 1 to 4, spanning Northgate Street to King William Road, were successfully delivered between 2017 and 2024. Once the final southern section between Wood Street and Cross Road (Stage 5) is complete, it will significantly improve cross-council connectivity between the City of Mitcham, the City of Unley and the City of Adelaide. 

The proposed streetscape works for Stage 5 focus on creating a safer, more accessible environment for cyclists and pedestrians. Stage 5 works will include: 

  • Intersection realignment: Realignment of the Wood Street / Northgate Street intersection to improve navigation and access for cyclists along the bikeway route.
  • Enhanced cycling infrastructure: Introduction of buffered bicycle lanes on the north side of Northgate Street, and, a shared-use path on the south side to provide safer cycling connections between Wood Street and Heywood Park.
  • New crossing points: Installation of two wombat crossings on Northgate Street to enable safe pedestrian and cyclist movements and to improve connections between bicycle lanes, the shared-use path, King William Road and Heywood Park.
  • Speed limit reduction: Reduction of the speed limit on Northgate Street from 50km/h to 40 km/h between Victoria Avenue and King William Road to improve safety for all road users, particularly at wombat crossings.
  • Park accessibility improvements: Construction of a new shared-use path through Heywood Park, improving connectivity between Whistler Avenue and Wood Street, alongside a redesigned park entry at Whistler Avenue that separates pedestrian and cyclist movements.

Phase 1 - Project Delivery 2025/26

Due to budget availability, the Project will be delivered in two phases (Phase 1 and 2 Scope of Works(PDF, 2MB)). 

Phase 1 works will be delivered as part of Council’s 2025–26 Walking and Cycling Plan Implementation Budget, supported by a $200,000 State Bicycle Fund grant, and will include:

  • realignment of the Wood Street / Northgate Street intersection;
  • construction of a new wombat crossing on Northgate Street, east of King William Road; and,
  • improvements to Whistler Avenue, including upgrades at the Heywood Park entrance and the Heywood Avenue junction.

Phase 1 - Construction Work Updates 2025/26

Construction works notices will be published here during the Project. As works progress, visit this webpage again for information on where works are happening, and related traffic restrictions and detours.

Construction works on Whistler Avenue are now substantially complete, with only minor line marking, signage and landscaping works remaining.

From 13 April 2026, the intersection of King William Road and Northgate Street will be partially closed to facilitate construction of the new wombat crossing on Northgate Street, east of King William Road.

In addition, the intersection of Westall Street and Northgate Street will be closed periodically between 21 May and 31 May 2026. Both intersections are expected to be completed and fully open by the end of May 2026.

The intersection of Wood Street and Northgate Street will be closed between 26 May and 12 June 2026, for the junction realignment works to be undertaken. Directly impacted residents will be notified prior to the intersection closure, with local access maintained.

Detours will be in place for the duration of the works, with clearly signposted alternative routes provided. Road users are encouraged to avoid the area where possible.

We appreciate the community’s patience and understanding during these works and acknowledge the temporary impacts on local residents and road users.
