Unley Celebrates Two Decades of SALA
Published on 08 August 2025
Running through August, this year’s SALA in Unley features over 300 artists across 52 exhibitions, making it one of the strongest local contributions to festival registrations across metropolitan Adelaide.
From exhibitions in our local galleries and libraries, to artworks in shopfronts, parks, and even on our street bins, creativity is around every corner of our City. Whether you're an art lover, a curious local, or just wandering through the neighbourhood, you're bound to encounter something inspiring.
A Perfect Day Experiencing SALA in Unley:
Begin your afternoon on Duthy Street with a hands-on oil painting workshop hosted by local Unley artist Catherine Fitz-Gerald. After a warm homemade soup lunch at the workshop, head over to the Calico Cat Gallery on King William Road to explore “This is Australia,” an exhibition that captures the spirit of our nation through diverse artistic lenses. As the sun sets, make your way to Goodwood Road and discover vibrant paintings from artist Eksha Patidar at the Suburban Brew Tap Room, or wander over to Willy’s Wine Bar for a glass of red and take in Renaissance-inspired sculptures by sculptor Anthony Smerdon with ‘Architectural Wonders.”
For a full list of all 52 exhibitions and workshops, along with everything to see and do in Unley this SALA, please visit the SALA website.
Celebrating Creative Aging:
This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the City of Unley’s Active Aging Award, which is an initiative aligned with our Active Ageing Strategy to recognise and encourage creativity among our ageing community.
Last year’s recipient, South Australian artist Peter Fitton, captivated audiences with his Japanese-inspired exhibition Ukiyo and the Rabbits of Okunoshima. You can view his work on display this SALA at the Hughes Gallery on Fullarton Road.
Keep an eye out: the 2025 Active Ageing Winner will be announcement during the SALA Awards later this August. The winner will receive a $2,000 prize and will also get a solo exhibition at Hughes Gallery during SALA in 2026.
