Charles Walk is a shared path in Unley that runs from Cleland Avenue (approximately 200 metres east of King William Road) to Unley Road. It forms part of the Glen Osmond Creek Trail and is frequently used each day by people walking and cycling.
A pedestrian and cyclist counter has been installed on Charles Walk to better understand how the path is being used. Data collected between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2026 recorded more than 159,000 walking and cycling trips along the path. On an average weekday, approximately 458 people use Charles Walk, with around 70% of users walking and around 30% cycling.

Proposed intersection improvements
The City of Unley Walking and Cycling Plan 2022–2027 identifies several minor intersections along Charles Walk where people walking and cycling are required to give way to vehicles.
Given the relatively low volume of vehicles crossing the path and the current intersection design, the existing arrangements can create confusion for both path users and drivers, where drivers are the ones frequently stopping to give way. This can create uncertainty about who has priority and result in inconsistent behaviour at these locations.
Through the 2025/26 Annual Business Plan and Budget, funding has been allocated to develop concept designs for improvements at the four intersections along Charles Walk.
The project aims to provide clear and consistent priority for people walking and cycling at each of the following crossing points:
- Charles Walk and Cleland Avenue
- Charles Walk and the Former B&M Glass driveway (84 Charles Street)
- Charles Walk and Little Charles Street
- Charles Walk and Mary Place
The designs for intersection locations 2 and 4 have also been influenced by changes to the surrounding area, including B&M Glass relocating from the site, the sale of the Mary Place laneway, and changes to Charles Lane associated with the Unley 108 development.
Council is now seeking community feedback on the proposed intersection upgrades.
