A well-loved community space

Goodwood Oval is one of only a few sporting precincts in the City of Unley and has been at the heart of local sport, recreation and community life for many years.

It’s home to the Goodwood Saints Football Club, Goodwood Cricket Club, Tennis World and the Forestville Hockey Club (until mid-2026).

Each year, more than 1,200 players take part in organised sport at the oval, with many junior members from right here in Unley. The space is also enjoyed by hundreds of residents and visitors each week for casual recreation.

With year-round use and a wide variety of users, it’s important that Goodwood Oval continues to offer safe, accessible and modern facilities

While the oval is well used and well loved, many facilities are showing their age. In 2015, we worked with the community to create the Goodwood Oval Improvement Plan. This plan guides how we maintain and improve the site so it meets the needs of today and the future.

Since then, we’ve completed the grandstand upgrade with State Government funding, making it more inclusive and comfortable for players and spectators.

Looking ahead, planned improvements include:

  • Redeveloping and expanding the tennis courts to competition standard ($400,000 endorsed in the 2025–26 Annual Business Plan & Budget)

  • Upgrading irrigation and drainage to improve turf quality and allow for year-round use (subject to grant funding)

  • Relocating the cricket practice nets to improve safety (subject to grant funding)

We’re also exploring upgrades that benefit the broader community, such as:

  • A more inclusive and engaging playground (to be delivered as a separate project)

  • New uses for vacated buildings

  • Opportunities for the green space that will become available once the Hockey Club departs in 2026

Planning for the future

The Forestville Hockey Club will leave Goodwood Oval in June 2026, opening up a rare opportunity to rethink how their building and playing area could be used.

Over the next 12 months we will:

  • Speak with local residents, clubs and stakeholders to gather ideas

  • Look at possible recreational and community uses

  • Consider options for restoring parts of the site to open green space

  • Decide on the future location of the cricket practice nets

Have your say

Your input will help shape what comes next. Community consultation will be held in late 2025 for three weeks. Register now on Your Say Unley to stay up to date and be notified when consultation opens, so you can have your say on the future of Goodwood Oval.
