Wilberforce Walk

Wilberforce walk 04

Wilberforce Walk follows Brownhill Creek and provides an important off-road walking and cycling corridor. In collaboration with the development along Anzac Highway, Council established a new connection from Third Avenue by enclosing the previous open channel.

Stages 1 and 2, between Anzac Highway and Second Avenue, have established a safe shared-use path for cyclists and pedestrians, lighting upgrades and new landscape plantings. These stages were delivered with support from the State Government’s Open Space Grant Program.

Wilberforce Walk forms a key strategic link in the City of Unley’s walking and cycling network, strengthening connections to the Marino Rocks and Mike Turtur Bikeways, the Unley Swimming Centre, Forestville Reserve, Goodwood rail and tram interchanges, and health services along Anzac Highway.

The Wilberforce Walk corridor is being delivered in four stages, with the first two phases now completed. The detailed design for Stage 3 (Second Avenue to Leah Street) is now finalised, with construction contingent on the completion of Brownhill Creek works. Stage 4 (Leah Street to Nairne Terrace) designs will be completed soon, with construction to be scheduled in a future year, subject to funding.

Stage 4: Wilberforce Walk Improvements

The streetscape improvement design for Stage 4 of Wilberforce Walk was developed in consultation with the community between 18 February and 12 March 2025.

This stage extends the route from Stage 3 at Leah Street, creating a connection to Forestville Reserve, the Unley Swimming Centre, and the Marino Rocks Bikeway at Nairne Terrace via Nichols Street.

Nichols Street is a quiet, low-speed local road, carrying approximately 230 to 360 vehicles per day. Traffic speeds are generally low, with 85% of drivers travelling at or below 40 km/h.

Council endorsed the preferred concept design to proceed to detailed design at its meeting on 28 July 2025. The design incorporates the following elements:

  1. Priority pedestrian raised ‘wombat’ crossing at Leah Street.
  2. Raised continuous footpath across Nichols Street at Leah Street.
  3. Intersection improvements at Ethel Street and Nichols Street, including kerb build outs to narrow crossing distance, calm traffic movements and provide compliant kerb ramps in the north-south and east-west directions.
  4. Printed pavement treatments at both Charles Street and Ethel Street approaches to Nichols Street to reinforce the ‘Give-Way’ junctions.
  5. Additional bicycle sharrows (bicycle symbols) with street print on Nichols Street to improve legibility of route.
  6. Intersection improvements at Nichols Street and Nairne Terrace to better connect pedestrians and cyclists to the Marino Rocks Bikeway, and, improve compliance with Nairne Terrace’s one-way northbound traffic flow.
  7. A raised platform within Nichols Street junction to Nairne Terrace to re-enforce to motorists to slow down and stop.
