Young Street Neighbourhood Bicycle Route (Stages 2 and 3)

The Young Street Neighbourhood Bicycle Route Project aims to create a safer and better-connected Young Street for pedestrians and cyclists.

Young Street is a key east–west active travel corridor that provides important connections:

  • East to the City of Burnside and Glen Osmond Road; and
  • West to the Wayville Showgrounds, the Goodwood business precinct, and the Mike Turtur Bikeway.

The route also serves local schools and childcare centres, including Parkside Primary School and St Raphael’s School.

Council has completed Stage 1 of the route at the intersection of George Street and Young Street. Following extensive community consultation in 2024 and 2025, Stages 2 and 3 are now progressing to detailed design.

The proposed improvements for Young Street (Stages 2 and 3), between Unley Road and Glen Osmond Road, aim to:

  • enhance safety for walkers and cyclists and reduce traffic speeds;
  • encourage active travel; and
  • improve route continuity for people accessing the local schools, parks and amenities.

Stage 2: Proposed Improvements (Unley Road and George Street)

Council endorsed the preferred concept design for Stage 2(PDF, 6MB) to proceed to detailed design based on community feedback at its Council meeting held in November 2024.

Key improvements include:

  • Installation of four new on-street landscaped kerb buildouts on the southern side of Young Street between Porter Street and George Street.
  • Approximately 11m² of additional greening, with space for up to four new trees (subject to the feasibility of underground services).
  • Installation of 10 new street print locations featuring road markings (or bicycle symbols) to improve route navigation.
  •  Improvements at the Porter Street and Young Street junction to reduce bike speeds and increase rider awareness of the footpath crossing, reinforcing the need to give way to pedestrians.
  • Further signage improvements to highlight Young Street east of Porter Street as a ‘No Through’ Road.

Stage 3: Proposed Improvements (George Street and Glen Osmond Road)

Similarly, council endorsed the preferred concept design for Stage 3(PDF, 10MB) to proceed to detailed design based on community feedback at its Council meeting held in November 2024.

This section experiences higher traffic volumes and speeds than Stage 2, so the design prioritises traffic calming and shared path connections, including:

  • Installation of three new single-lane slow points with a speed hump, bicycle bypass and landscaping to improve cyclist safety and traffic calming.
  • Installation of four new printed pavement treatments at intersections along the street corridor to enhance visibility and navigation.
  • Installation of a 65m shared-use path on the northern side of Young Street near the Glen Osmond Road approach, to provide a safe connection for pedestrians and cyclists to the signalised crossing point.
  • Approximately 33m² of greening opportunities, with the potential for planting up to 2 new trees (subject to the feasibility of underground services).
  • Loss of 14 on-street parking spaces (representing a 9% reduction in parking capacity) to enable the broader benefits of the plan to be realised.
