Young Street Roundabout Upgrades - King William Road to Unley Road

Council is planning upgrades to these three roundabouts on Young Street, between King William Road and Unley Road, Unley:

  • Roberts Street
  • Palmerston Road
  • Salisbury Street

The roundabouts form part of the Young Street Neighbourhood Bicycle Route and they are scheduled to be upgraded as part of Council’s asset renewal program. The upgrades will support safer and more accessible walking and cycling for all users.

Why are upgrades needed?

Upgrades to the roundabouts are needed as they:

  • are in poor condition;
  • do not meet current safety standards;
  • do not provide safe or accessible crossing points as pedestrians are required to walk in the roundabout; and
  • do not adequately cater for people riding bikes.

The detailed design of the upgrades is underway and they are funded through Council's 2025-26 Annual Business Plan and Budget. Subject to Council endorsement of the 2026-27 Annual Business Plan and Budget, construction is proposed to be funded through Council's 2026-27 Asset Renewal Program.

What is the roundabout upgrade design proposal?

The proposed designs convert the existing roundabouts to a radial roundabout layout with zebra crossings, based on best-practice guidance from the South Australia Active Travel Design Guide.

Each roundabout upgrade includes the following features:

  • Enlarged central island with a concrete perimeter to slow vehicle speeds while still accommodating larger vehicles (i.e. waste collection trucks) without kerb damage.
  • Landscaped kerb extensions and splitter islands, including rain gardens, to guide vehicles toward the central island and encourage lower speeds.
  • Bicycle awareness zones on each approach to alert drivers that cyclists may use the full traffic lane.
  • Zebra crossings on all approaches to provide safer and more convenient pedestrian crossings.
  • Upgraded street lighting for improved safety and visibility.
  • Integrated irrigation systems to reduce long-term maintenance of landscaped areas.

Parking impacts

To help support the upgrades there is some on-street parking that will need to be removed to improve safety and visibility:

  • Roberts Street roundabout – 5 spaces removed (2 on Young Street and 3 on Roberts Street)
  • Palmerston Road roundabout – 2 spaces removed (1 on Young Street and 1 on Palmerston Road)
  • Salisbury Street roundabout – 1 space removed (1 on Salisbury Street)

These changes are necessary to meet safety and visibility standards for people crossing the road. It is important to note that the same parking impacts would occur if the design only included accessible kerb ramps and pedestrian refuges, regardless of whether zebra crossings are provided.
