If you are considering working overseas, you may require a Foreign Work Authorisation (FWA). This is particularly important if you are a current or former ADF member, Defence APS employee, or have worked in defence-related industry or research. An FWA may be required if the overseas work you are considering could benefit a foreign military, government, or government-controlled organisation.

Not all overseas roles require approval. Some opportunities, including certain work with Five Eyes partners (United States, United Kingdom, Canada and New Zealand), may be exempt. However, requirements can vary depending on your circumstances, so it is recommended that you seek advice early.

To help you understand what applies to your situation, information sessions are available. A short conversation can clarify whether you need to apply for an FWA, whether you may be exempt, and how the application process works. These sessions are also an opportunity to ask questions and receive practical guidance before committing to overseas employment.

Two session options are available:

  • A virtual information session on 10 June 2026
  • An informal in-person drop-in session on 16 June 2026

These sessions are suitable for current or former defence personnel, APS employees, defence industry professionals, and anyone considering overseas work connected to government or defence sectors.
