King William Road precinct upgrade wins 2020 Mainstreet SA award

The City of Unley is celebrating its 2020 Mainstreet SA award win for the King William Road precinct upgrade by taking the opportunity to remind South Australians to shop and dine locally this festive season.
In December, the transformed precinct was announced the winner of the 2020 Mainstreet SA’s Public Space and Streetscape Design Award.
The award recognises street design and development work that enriches public spaces to create a cohesive and inviting mainstreet, laneway, town centre or precinct. The Mainstreet SA award judges were impressed by the flexible design that can accommodate a range of future needs.
Mayor Michael Hewitson AM said these awards are a wonderful recognition that we have delivered on our community’s vision for a more accessible, beautiful and active mainstreet. The timing of the award also acts as a reminder to embrace our local retailers and dining destinations during this important festive and holiday season.
“I encourage all South Australians to support local business. I invite people to come to King William Road and experience the vibrant precinct in person. Finish your Christmas shopping, enjoy an outdoor dining experience or plan your New Year celebrations,” Mayor Hewitson said.
“The success of the King William Road upgrade has been a result of working in partnership with contractors, stakeholders and the wider community. It’s this support that has seen the precinct transformed and activated into a pedestrian-friendly, accessible and thriving space,” he said.
For trader Laurie Godi from the popular Italian restaurant, Godi La Vita the summer holidays are a prime opportunity to embrace the road’s transformed streetscape and outdoor dining capabilities.
“The ability to have outdoor dining offers an incredible opportunity to showcase our business. The alfresco dining also creates a customer experience that is special. We love the sense of community on King William Road, and the fact that the upgrade has created new opportunities for all. We are so grateful for this continued support and look forward to seeing everyone over the summer.”
The King William Road upgrade introduced some exciting new additions for visitors including in excess of 50 new trees, delivering a more beautiful street, a greener streetscape and a consistent canopy for cooling shade. Newly installed sculptures add another layer of colour and interest to the mainstreet. The Tectonic installations, by the team of artists of Quentin Gore, Gregg Mitchell and Amy Joy Watson, can be found at three locations along the road.
