Case Study: Encouraging Active Travel and Student Safety

Introduction Tag On Unley Primary School Bike

Unley Primary School is the first school in South Australia to roll out Tag On, a system supporting safe and independent student travel to and from school, while giving parents greater peace of mind.

With growing interest in active travel (like walking, scooting, and cycling), the school aims build a culture of healthier students, while addressing concerns about student safety and school congestion during the busy drop-off and pick-up times.

The Initiative

On 21 March 2025, Unley Primary School celebrated the launch of their Tag On system during National Ride2School Day.

Tag On is a smart tap on/off system allowing students to log their arrival and departure from school using a personal tag. By tapping, real-time alerts are sent to parents confirming their child has left or arrived safely to school, giving added peace of mind. The system;

  • keeps children active, which in turn provides mental and physical health benefits;
  • allows children to experience independency;
  • rewards active travel by allocating points to the child’s school house;
  • provides peace of mind for parents through real-time arrival notifications;
  • provides data to the school to better understand travel habits;
  • educates on and promotes safe travel;
  • reduces traffic congestion around the school zone; and
  • encourages a more sustainable travel mode.

Tag On for Unley Primary School is supported by a Grant from the Government of South Australia through the Way2Go program.
