Re-Focus, Re-Use, Re-Purpose

Avoid waste this summer by Re-Focusing on reducing household waste.

Shopping with Re-Useable bags and containers

Have you discovered Clarence Park Food Co-opA local, volunteer run co-operative that sells dried fruit, grains, legumes, seeds, honey and more to members ($1 for membership). Everything is sold at low cost and with minimal packaging. Don’t forget to BYO jars, containers and bags.

  • Where: Clarence Park Community Centre
  • When: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Saturday, 10.30am - 12.30pm (during the school term).

Milk on Tap is available at two local businesses, with the refillable glass bottles reducing single-use plastics. Simply purchase refillable 1L glass milk bottle(s), have them filled, enjoy, wash, return and refill again. Find out more at Fleurieu Milk on Tap.

  • Where: Spread Delicatessen and Bar (246 Unley Rd, Unley) and Local Kitchen Co (89 Unley Rd, Parkside).

More tips to reduce packaging and single-use plastics:

  • Make sure to grab your reusable coffee cup, water bottle and shopping bags as you head out.
  • Remember your reusable produce bags when heading to the shops or keep your fruit & veg loose. If you do need to use a compostable bag provided in store, reuse them later to line your kitchen caddy and get your food scraps into the green bin (ready to be composted). Just make sure to check that the bag is certified as 100% compostable (look for the seedling logo (AS 4736) and/or the home compost logo (AS 5810).
  • Seek out larger, less packaged products (i.e. avoiding snack packs and single serve options).
  • Explore bulk food stores to discover what items you can buy unpackaged (some independent supermarkets have a range of bulk foods, head to the Adelaide Central Markets, or search online).
  • Ask your butcher, deli or favourite take-away if you can bring your own containers next time (making sure they are clean).
  • Stop and enjoy your coffee (in a real cup) or dine in avoid takeaway packaging.
