Revitalising Unley Road

The Unley Road Public Realm Design Guidelines establish a new palette of materials, furniture, and other features to support the revitalisation of Unley Road and the adjacent side streets.

The Guidelines aim to:

  • Enhance the character, identity and appeal of Unley Road
  • Maximise opportunities for economic activation and community interaction
  • Increase greening and amenity
  • Improve pedestrian and bicycle access and movement

The implementation of the new public realm will be staged over several years, responding to the condition of the existing footpaths and other infrastructure.

Council will also consider opportunities to work with interested stakeholders to accelerate the streetscape renewal through co-investment partnerships with local businesses, landlords, developers, and the State Government.

In early 2023 the City of Unley will commence the first stage of the upgrade, extending along the eastern side of Unley Road, between Greenhill Road and Whittam Street.

The extent of works is informed by the Council’s requirement to upgrade its existing stormwater infrastructure and replace new kerbing along this section. Once the infrastructure works have been completed, the footpaths will be paved with new look pavers, as well as new seating and trees at key locations. Final tree locations will be subject to below ground site conditons. Improvements to the Clyde Street and Belgrave Court intersections will also be considered.

Council is also working with the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to renew Clearway and Bike Lane signage at other locations along Unley Road which have succumbed to fading from the weather conditions and high traffic over recent years.
