Judges Comments: Ella’s song reflects a non-specific change from older times to now, choosing fashion to highlight in her chorus. We appreciated the historical facts included in her lyrics. The song follows a recognisable verse chorus song structure and was performed with confidence. We were impressed with the video presentation, featuring significant Unley landmarks.

It’s Not Always Been This Way Lyrics - By Ella McCurdie

Let me tell you a story about a time about a time long ago

About a time when there was no electricity and no phones

They didn’t have movies. They didn’t have tv, instead they viewed pictures through stereoscopes

No cars to be where you need just your own feet and bicycles

And carriages and buggies and wagons all pulled by horse

It’s not always been this way

There’s not always been a video game to play when you’re bored

It’s not always been this way

Our clothing style has changed over time

Girls barely wear frilly dresses and boys don’t use canes and top hats

It’s not always been, it’s not, it’s not, it’s not always been this way

Let me sing you a song about a time long ago

About a time when there was no you and me and no Australia

It was all just separate states not knowing that soon they would federate

Henry Parkes was about to change the world

With his Tenterfield speech in 1889 It’s not always been this way

There’s not always been a video game to play when you’re bored

It’s not always been this way

Our clothing style has changed over time

Girls barely wear frilly dresses and boys don’t use canes and top hats

It’s not always been, it’s not, it’s not always been this way

It’s not always been this way

And it will never stay the same

The future is coming and it will bring more change

Technology will advance and styles will drift away

It’s not always been this way
