Unley landscape awards recognition

The Wilberforce Walk project, now in its third stage of development, was the recipient of the 2023 AILA SA Landscape Architecture Award for Small Projects. The judges said: 'The commitment to delivering a quality community outcome for this space is evident throughout the planning and delivery. This previously inaccessible piece of infrastructure has been transformed into a beautiful community space that demonstrates a high attention to detail. The design is simple but well considered, incorporating a mix of endemic plantings, natural materials, and strategic lighting.'

Recognition didn't stop there, with Wilberforce Walk Stage 3 also receiving a Commendation in the AILA 'Healthy Parks, Healthy People SA' category, which lauded the project's 'integration as a new active transport connection, as well as offering an increase in green spaces in an otherwise forgotten corridor.' This state-based award is an initiative of Healthy Parks Healthy People SA and AILA SA, recognising a built landscape architecture project which best demonstrates the key principles for quality open space.

Also receiving a Commendation in the inaugural SA Water for Life category was City Design's Revitalising Duthy Street project, celebrating South Australian expertise that champions the role of water in creating liveable towns and cities.

The judges said: 'This project demonstrates how small, considered interventions can make a significant contribution to reducing pollutants entering waterways and reclaim roadways to create cooler, greener spaces for the community. This integrated approach to streetscape design is a great example showcasing how small-scale changes to local streets can be applied across a city.'

Finally, Unley's City Design team received the 2023 AILA SA President’s Award, presented to those 'who have shown significant commitment and support for development and promotion of the landscape profession in Australia, increasing the profile and capability of landscape architecture.'

This prestigious award recognises the commitment to creating a better city for the people of Unley through effective strategies and projects from small, local insertions to wider, city-shaping initiatives.

Congratulations to the entire City Design team - and echoing the AILA judges' statements - 'keep up the great work!'
