Commonwealth Home Support Program Transition

CHSP Client at Buddies Breakfast

The City of Unley has made the difficult decision to transition away from delivering services under the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP).

While there will be no immediate changes to the program or the delivery of our active CHSP client's services, Council’s involvement in the program is scheduled to conclude on 30 June 2026.

This decision follows a comprehensive review of recent changes to the Aged Care Act 2024 introduced by the Federal Government late last year, which significantly altered the governance, compliance and accountability requirements for organisations delivering aged care services.

After careful consideration, Council determined that continuing to deliver CHSP services presented ongoing financial, operational, and regulatory risks that were not sustainable over the long term.

With so many high-quality aged care providers operating in and around the City of Unley, exiting the program was considered to be in the best interests of both the community and the organisation.

Council understands that this news may cause concern for clients and their families. Supporting people through this transition is a priority for us. Over the next five months, we will continue to provide CHSP services to existing active clients. Our staff will also work closely with the Federal Government, alternative aged care providers, and our active clients to ensure a smooth and respectful transition, with continuity of care and wellbeing at the centre of all planning.

While Council will no longer deliver CHSP services beyond 30June 2026, its commitment to supporting active ageing in the community remains strong. We will continue to deliver and support a wide range of programs, services, and experiences for older residents and explore new ways to support residents to age well in Unley.
