Lets-chalk-in-Welcoming-Week.pdf(PDF, 2MB) was held on Tues 13 September 2022 in front of the Unley Civic Centre between the Village Green and St Augustine’s Church.

Welcoming Week (9-18 September) in Australia had it's first year in 2022 and joined other countries in welcoming all people, including migrants, refugees, people seeking asylum and international students.

Artistic messages of welcome were created, showing the celebration of cultural diversity and inclusion to all in the City of Unley.

Harmony Week

Harmony Week is a national celebration to promote diversity and acceptance of other cultures. Harmony Week has been a popular and prominent event on our cultural calendar. For further information and resources, please visit Unley in Harmony.

My Journey, My Unley

The City of Unley is telling the stories of people who have travelled from overseas to settle in our community. Some of our local residents have shared their experiences, learnings and dreams as part of our project My Journey, My Unley. Here are some of the highlights of their journeys, favourite places in Unley and a special something which symbolises that journey.

Feast Festival

Feast Festival Logo

Feast Festival is Adelaide’s LGBTI Queer Arts and Cultural Festival that celebrates Pride and Diversity. Feast began in 1997 providing a safe and inclusive platform for the LGBTIQ community to share and express themselves through art and culture.

The City of Unley has had connections with Feast Festival since 2008. We were one of the inaugural Councils to commit and participate in Feast Festival. We have run our own events and other programs coordinated across various Councils.

These initiatives have included:
  • Exhibitions
  • Video projections on the side of the Unley Library
  • Interactive art installations in cafes
  • Creative conversations and pop up cinemas with artists in car parks, markets and tram stops
  • Cabaret performance by Libby O’ Donovan in the Town Hall
  • Plunge Pool Party at Unley Swim Centre

Flying the rainbow

Rainbow Flag

We were also one of the inaugural Councils to fly the Rainbow. In 2020 the City of Unley flew the Rainbow Flag for Pride Month, an initiative of Feast Festival, for the duration of November.

Also dubbed “Pridevember” this initiative is now a month long celebration of inclusivity and diversity in South Australia. Celebrating diversity, the Rainbow Flag represents the six colours of the rainbow as a symbol of gay and lesbian community pride.

We have been applying a cultural lens to our community to help us shape our new five-year Cultural Plan so that we can respect, enhance and inform a unique Unley culture.

The Cultural Plan 2021-2026 is now endorsed and is available to view on Council’s website.
