Data collection during the extended season at Unley Swimming Centre

Lifeguard watching over swimmers in the pool

From Monday 26 May to Saturday 13 September 2025, the Unley Swimming Centre will operate through winter for the first time ever. As part of this historic extended season, we’ll be collecting data to better understand how the Centre is used during colder months.

While the season extension is currently not viewed as a trial or an ongoing extension, it is an opportunity for the City of Unley to gain an insight into what an all year round service would look like, should their be an appetite to provide such a service in the future.

To assist with this, Centre management will be collecting data throughout Phase Three, including data on our utilities usage, and the associated costs of Winter operations. Another key area that we will be focussing on will directly relate to our visitations, and who is using the facility during this period.

What we’re collecting – and why

During this period (Phase Three), we’ll be tracking:

  • Who’s using the Centre (based on postcode data)
  • Utility usage and operational costs over winter

Most of this will happen behind the scenes, but if you’re visiting the Centre, you may be asked to provide a small amount of information to support this process. This helps us understand where visitors are coming from and informs future planning for the Centre.

What you need to know

How you enter the Centre determines how your data is collected:

  • Casual visitors: All patrons paying casually on arrival at the Centre will be asked by staff for their post code. Staff will then record the post code to our daily visit database.
  • Membership holders (12-month or multi-visit): will have their postcode retrieved from their Active World profile, and can use the entrance gates as normal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if my postcode isn’t listed in my Active World profile?

If your profile within Active World doesn’t have a recorded post code, correspondence will be sent to you asking to update this (instructions will be included in the correspondence).

Staff will also be available at the Centre to assist you if required.

Do I need to update my postcode if I am not visiting the Centre during Phase Three?

Only patrons who attend the Centre during Phase Three, and don’t have their postcode listed on their profile will be contacted. If you do not attend the Centre during this period, you do not need to update your profile.

It is recommended that you check your contact details regularly to ensure they are correct (including your email and contact number). We rely on your contact information within the Active World membership portal if we need to contact you regarding your memberships, swimming lessons, or group fitness bookings.

What other personal information will you be collecting?

We will not be collecting any other personal information apart from postcodes.

What will this information be used for?

We will be using post codes to help map where our visitations originate from during Phase Three. This data then may be used for internal reporting at the City of Unley and with the Office of Recreation, Sport and Racing.

What if I don’t wish to participate in the data collection?

All patrons have the right to not participate if they so wish, with their visits recorded separately. Please note though, that the more extensive and accurate the data is that we collect during Phase Three, the more useful it may be for any plans or discussions around the future of the Unley Swimming Centre.

When will the collection of data begin?

The collection of visitation data will commence on Monday 26 May 2025 and will run through Phase Three until Saturday 13 September 2025.
