Let's talk rainbow youth

Unley Library’s Rainbow Youth booklist is a mix of fiction, graphic novel, memoir and nonfiction titles exploring queer stories and experiences.

Representation matters. For young people questioning or exploring their sexuality or gender it can be extremely affirming to read about characters and stories that reflect them. For friends and family wanting to support their lgbtiqa+ loved one reading these stories can give insight and understanding. The fiction titles in this booklist feature positive and diverse characters set within a range of genres and plots. As well as the linking themes of queer lives, the books also cover topics including familial, platonic and romantic relationships, mental health, body positivity, disability, race, bullying, harassment, masculinity and feminism. The nonfiction titles aimed at lgbtiqa+ people and their allies include sexual education books, gender and sexuality theory, queer terminology reference guides, trans stories and pronoun guides.
