Goodwood community centre entrance

The City of Unley is committed to the successful operation of the Goodwood Community Centre and ensuring community demand is being met and facilitating community programs to be run within the Centre.

The City of Unley is resuming management of the Centre from July 1, 2023, noting the Centre will remain open for operating hours as currently available.

To support a smooth transition, it’s intended that the current Centre coordinator will continue from July 1.

While Council aims for programs to continue without disruption, it has decided against supporting GCS’s (Goodwood Community Services) recent proposal to fund and underwrite programs (Toy Library, Playgroup and Goodygym) at the Goodwood Community Centre after its lease expires on June 30, 2023.

Unley Council will assess community demand and seek alternative providers to support the delivery of community programs previously run by Goodwood Community Services.

The return of Goodwood Community Centre to Council management follows an unsuccessful call for tenders to manage the Centre, and a separate and unsuccessful expression of interest (EOI) process, neither of which resulted in a successful outcome.

In taking over management of the Goodwood Community Centre, Council will maintain current opening hours while exploring options for services and programs to meet community demand of the Centre.

As part of the transition arrangements and Goodwood Community Services’ lease agreement, Council is seeking details of current and past hirers, and will contact all known groups that use the Goodwood Community Centre to confirm and honour current booking arrangements for 12 months.

Any groups or individuals seeking to hire Goodwood Community Centre, or with an existing arrangement or booking in place after July 1, can contact the City of Unley on 8372 5111.

Frequently asked questions

Is Goodwood Community Centre closing?

No, Goodwood Community Centre will be open for the current operating hours and community programs and activities will continue to be delivered.

Why are GCS leaving Goodwood Community Centre?

GCS’s lease on the Goodwood Community Centre has come to an end and after unsuccessful tender and EOI processes, Council will resume management of the Centre from July 1, 2023.

GCS is welcome to continue to run community programs at the Goodwood Community Centre should they wish to do so.

Why isn’t the lease being renewed?

The return of Goodwood Community Centre to Council management follows an unsuccessful call for tenders by the City of Unley to manage the Centre and a separate and unsuccessful expression of interest process to identify a management solution that meets community need. Neither process resulted in a successful outcome.

What support is Council offering GCS to continue its programs?

Council continues to welcome GCS to deliver programs at the Centre. In order to reduce their overheads and continue programs, GCS have been offered use of the Centre for Playgroup, Goodygym and Goodwood Toy Library program delivery and program storage at no cost for the next 12 months.

Does Council have plans to demolish or change the use of the building?

No, Council does not have plans to demolish or change the use of the building.

Does this impact the green space?

No, use of the green space is unchanged. The space is bookable for large groups by contacting Council on 8372 5111.

Will Playgroup and Goodygym continue?

GCS have announced that their Goodygym and Playgroup programs will close as below:

  • Goodygym closes Saturday 17th June
  • Playgroup closes Tuesday 20th June

Council will assess community demand and seek alternative providers to support the delivery of these programs.

What about other programs at the Centre?

GCS have announced that they plan to cease other programs at the Centre by 22 June 2023 and refunds will be made.

If you currently run a program at the Centre and wish to continue, please contact Council on 8372 5111 or email gcc@unley.sa.gov.au to speak with a team member about how to make a new arrangement.

Will Babytime and Wriggletime continue?

Yes, Babytime and Wriggletime are Council Library programs that are run from the Goodwood Community Centre, and will continue as usual.

If GCS stop running the Goodwood Toy Library, will my membership for the Goodwood Toy Library be valid at Unley? Will I be reimbursed?

Goodwood Toy Library is not a Council service, it’s run by GCS.

If you’re a current member of the Goodwood Toy Library, please contact GCS on 8272 7148.

Meanwhile, you are welcome to have a look at Unley Toy Library service, based at Unley Library.

I’m a volunteer for GCS – what happens to me and the program I run?

Council is keen for programs to continue, so if you are a current volunteer for a program, we would love to hear from you. It may be that you can be registered as a  volunteer through Council to continue your program as usual. Please get in touch to have a chat with us about this.

I’ve been sent a letter from GCS that says they are cancelling insurance and I need to remove my equipment. Where can I put it?

GCS has requested program providers remove their equipment as their insurance will lapse at 30 June 2023. Council’s insurance will continue through that period so there is no need to remove items if your program is continuing.

Why do I need to provide you with paperwork about my hire arrangements?

From 1 July, the hire agreement you have will be with Council, not GCS. We need to ensure that you understand the terms and conditions, who to pay and contact if you need anything, and to make sure we understand the requirements of your booking.

If you have any questions about the forms or process, the team are happy to assist.

Bookings, fees & refunds

What will be different at the Centre from July?
