Special collections

We have a number of specialist collections in our Libraries, created to provide for special interests or meet particular needs.

Active ageing, dementia friendly & brain training collections

The City of Unley has been recognised by the World Health Organisation as an Age Friendly City and Community and the Libraries continue to be an integral part.

Our Active Ageing collection brings together diverse subjects of interest, including retirement, health and general wellbeing that can be helpful when tackling the challenges of getting older. We've also developed a Dementia Friendly collection, which includes a variety of insightful literature on the topic. Library staff are always ready to help you find what you're looking for, over the phone or in person.

If you're interested in developing your memory and cognition, our new Brain Training collection is full of resources aimed at improving the health of your brain. From biohacks to brain food, this collection brings you useful, everyday insights into the world of neuroscience.

Autism spectrum collection

We've added a blue and gold 'infinity' sticker to the books and resources in our library that are about autism so they are easy to spot on our shelves. You can browse these items or place a hold via our catalogue by searching for 'autism spectrum'.

We have dedicated shelves in the parenting area at Unley Civic Library too—this is where you'll find books, sensory toys and resources for kids with autism or other developmental needs, and for their parents, families, and carers. Speak with our friendly staff if you need any assistance; we also welcome your feedback.

LGBTQ+ collection

Inclusivity and representation are important factors in how we manage our library collections. We're proud to share our LGBTQ+ collection with the community, which you can easily access via our library catalogue using the search term 'LGBTQ+'. As with all our collections, your feedback and suggestions are always welcome!

Dyslexia friendly

There are several ways to access dyslexia friendly resources; in our children's and teen areas, books are in 'Quick Reads' series boxes; by searching the catalogue for 'Dyslexic edition'; or if you prefer eBooks, Libby by Overdrive and BorrowBox have dyslexic font options.

Children's collections

Autism spectrum collection

We've put together some helpful resources to assist parents and carers with children who are on the Autism spectrum, or have other developmental needs. You'll find books for adults and kids, as well as kits containing sensory toys and other useful resources. Search for 'Autism spectrum' on our catalogue.

STEM collection

Support your child's development of STEM learning while encouraging reading at the same time! Our STEM collection will open your eyes to the variety of books on our shelves aimed at engaging the key skills that STEM disciplines foster. Search for 'STEM collection' on our catalogue to explore what's on offer.

Premier's Reading Challenge

Make completing the PRC easy! You can search our catalogue for 'PRC' and add R–23–56–9 or 9–12 to narrow it down to your desired year level.

Culturally diverse

Explore the cultures of the world through the magic of stories. We've highlighted the books in our children's collections that celebrate cultural diversity. Take a look on our catalogue.

Aboriginal collection

Learn about aboriginal history, stories and culture.  Look for the Aboriginal flag sticker on the spine of the books.  Browse the collection on our catalogue.

The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA)

Each year, the CBCA celebrates Australian children's literature through their Book of the Year awards, as well as the much-loved Book Week! You can search for award winners as well as nominated titles by searching for 'CBCA' on our catalogue.
